What Will I Learn in a Graphic Design BFA Program?
The three-year program (MGXD III) is for students who have earned a BA in another field or a Graphic Design Concentration. Around two-thirds of the courses for this program are in Design and related coursework. Course examples include Identity Systems, Typography I-III, Design and Social Environment, and Industrial Design. Students in the Design BFA Program will complete one or more paid internships along with a capstone design project that will be presented in UT Austin’s Annual Public Exhibition.

Consisting of 180 units of study, with 29 units in the Concentration, the Cal Poly GrC BS requires 60 units of upper-division courses and support courses such as Statistical Concepts and Methods, Physics, and World of Chemistry. Program graduates have also gone on to launch their own studios and freelance businesses. At the end of the fall semester, there is a candidacy review to admit freshmen into the first of our ComDes courses. This work is reviewed and scored by the entire Communication Design faculty at the end of the freshman spring semester and the first ComDes course. There is a second portfolio review to admit selected students into the Graphic Design track of the Communication Design program. Projects from this course are reviewed and ranked, and those who rank the highest are officially accepted into the program. The College of Fine and Applied Arts houses the Department of Art, which offers several programs for aspiring graphic designers. The MFA in Studio Art with a Concentration in Graphic Design consists of 60 semester hours including 24 hours in related arts, 18 hours in the concentration, 12 hours in art history, and six hours in graduate seminars. Upon completion of all coursework and projects for the program, MFA students will present their work in a thesis exhibition at Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston. Otis College of Art and Design is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
